What is a Kettlebell?

A kettlebell, also known as a “girya,” is an old school Russian strength and conditioning tool that is taking America by storm. They look like cannonballs with handles attached. You can find Kettlebells in Russian dictionaries dating as far back as 1704(if you go find a Russian dictionary from 1704 we need to sit down and have a serious talk). Kettlebells were originally used as counterbalances at farmers markets.

After the markets closed farmers would swing, lift, and juggle the kettlebells. It was soon obvious that these farmers were onto something. They were the envy of the town; building ridiculous strength and chiseled bodies. Fast forward 100+ years and strength and conditioning coaches all over the country are using kettlebells to improve athletes’ explosiveness, flexibility, endurance, and core strength.

Elite golfers, boxers, wrestlers, mixed martial artists, Marines, and celebrities are all training with kettlebells. Anyone trying to achieve a high level fitness or top sports performance should be training with them too. Kettlebell training is not for everyone. If you’re a whiner or someone who expects results without a drop of sweat you should probably keep waiting for that magic pill; this probably isn’t for you. It is not a walk in the park, but its ability to burn fat at an alarming rate and build long beautiful muscles can’t be ignored.

If you’re ready to get out of the gym and experience real strength gains, if you like to challenge yourself, and if you like to be part of a great team, then you are definitely GiryaFit material.
